The latest worldwide numbers have come in for Avatar and it has now exceeded $1 billion making it the fourth highest grossing movie of all-time after just 17 days of release. James Cameron is now the only director to have two movies in the $1 billion club and there are only five total that have made it. Avatar still has over $800 million to go to catch Titanic but will cruise into second place by the end of the week. Considering how fast it got to a billion it is realistic to now put the record set by Titanic in its sights.
Domestically Avatar pulled in $68.3 million this weekend for a total of $352.1 million. That represented the largest take for a movie’s third weekend in history and shattered the previous high of any weekend set in January. Only The Dark Knight reached the $350 million mark faster (14 days) but that movie had an opening weekend over twice the size of Avatar.
The upcoming weekdays will be telling as to how well Avatar will continue to draw considering many people will be back to work and school. With word-of-mouth so strong and with a likely Best Picture nomination to come in mid-January there is reason to believe it will be doing strong business well into March. More
