Boxing Day
The Test team\’s domination of England in this Ashes series has helped the MCG break the world Test attendance record.
Just after 4pm Cricket Australia announced a crowd of 90,831 for day one of the Boxing Day Test.
That bested the old mark of 90,800, set at the same ground in February 1961 during the famous Australia-West Indies series.
As the crowd figure steadily crept up during the afternoon, CA and various commentators called on fans to help break the record.
The record was set despite noticeable gaps at the top of the members\’ stand.
And there was more than one observation that Tests at Eden Gardens in Kolkata had featured unofficial crowds of more than 100,000.
Regardless, this was a historic Boxing Day Test moment.
There were a few drops of rain as the players warmed up, but the match started on time.
The heavy skies meant it was more like the MCG during the AFL season than Boxing Day, with the lights turned on before the lunch break.
The weather quickly improved and by early afternoon it was much more like summer, even though a blustery wind blew through the ground.
Australian captain Michael Clarke won his fourth straight toss in this series and took the risky decision to send in England.
The tourists showed more fight than they had for much of this series and as the Barmy Army found its voice, England batsmen Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell dug in against the Australian attack.
It wasn\’t pretty, but England were showing more fight than they had in the previous three Tests. More
