1. Enhance mood and general feeling of well-being through massage and the use of essential oils.
2. Improve blood and lymphatic circulation through massage and the use of essential oils. Depending upon the essential oils used the blood vessels will either constrict or dilate thereby raising or lowering blood pressure.
3. Balance the hormone production by the endocrine system.
4. Essential oils such as clary sage can mimic oestrogen.
5. Strengthen the immune system by helping to kill viruses, bacteria and fungal infections.
6. Reduce pain. 7. Encourage restful sleep. 8. Improve digestion.
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering one mood, cognitive, psychological or physical wellbeing. Aromatherapists, who specialise in the practice of aromatherapy, utilise blends of therapeutic essential oils that can be issued through topical application, massage, inhalation or water immersion to stimulate a desired response.
The use of essential oils for therapeutic, spiritual, hygienic and ritualistic purposes goes back to a number of ancient civilizations including the Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans who used them in cosmetics, perfumes and drugs.
The modes of application of aromatherapy include:
Aerial diffusion: for environmental fragrancing or aerial disinfection
Direct inhalation: for respiratory disinfection, decongestion, expectoration as well as psychological effects
Topical applications: for general massage, baths, compresses, therapeutic skin care.
Lemon oil is said to be uplifting and to relieve stress. In a Japanese study, lemon essential oil in vapour form has been found to reduce stress in mice. Research at The Ohio State University indicates that Lemon oil aroma may enhance one mood, and help with relaxation.
Thyme oil.
Peppermint oil is often used to deter ants, by applying a few drops on their trail.
Lavender, Jasmine, Chamomile and Peppermint are used for anti-stress, anti-anxiety and as an anti-depressant.
Sage oil has been suggested to boost short-term memory performance in many using it as a dietary supplement.
