How do You Use Social Media to Make Friends?

Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites can be used to make friends, plan events, and maybe even find a relationship... if you know how. We got a great student video asking how a social awkward student can use social media sites to make friends. Ana Kasparian of The Young Turks and John Iadarola give him advice on how to use facebook to make friends... and whether that even the best way to go about it. Do you think Jonathan should focus on using sites like Facebook and Twitter to plan events and find friends in college? Or should he use more traditional means like clubs, parties, etc? What advice would you give him? Have you started any real friendships or relationships online? Let us know! And if you liked this video, hit that Share button and "like" it as well! :)

Business tv Penny Power -why making friends online is easy

More expert business advice from social networking guru Penny Power, Founder of Ecademy. In this business tv show she gives straight forward advice and tips on how to make more friends online: "When anybody asks me 'how do I start to connect with people?' just think about the real world if you went into a moved into a pub, into a village and you went to the bar you wouldn't go in there and hand out your business care to everyone and start broadcasting what you were doing. What you would actually do is you'd sit quietly by the bar and you might buy the person next to you a drink and start talking to them but think about what you would do. You would ask them questions, you would show a huge interest in them, that how to start in a social network click on some profiles and write to them and say fantastic to hear that you enjoy swimming and you live near a lake and in Italy, how beautiful that must be. Put out the hand of friendship to them. The friendship is what you want to create inside a social network, a business network successful when you create the friendships first its relationship first, business second and so always look for opportunities to show an interest in the other person. Testimonials are really important, if somebody written a great blog, go onto their profile and write a great testimonial and say 'I just want to say what a great blog you wrote and put a link into that blog', that doing that person a real favour - but remember you're leaving your link on that persons profile as well so people that write testimonials about me will obviously, my profile is busy, look for the profiles where people are busy and anybody who writes a testimonial on that persons profile providing they have some value to give in that, its not just a 'Hi, nice to meet you' because that not what a testimonial is about, but actually something that endorses that answer, and says the value they felt that they gave you. Do that, that putting out a hand, that a really nice gesture. So ...

Making Friends Not Always Easy for Foreign Students

This is the VOA Special English Education Report , from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish A recent story in the Chronicle of Higher Education said many foreign students report feeling lonely or unwelcome in Australia. Those feelings are one of the reasons why Australia is taking a close look at its international education industry. The government has formed an advisory council to help develop a five-year national strategy for the future of international education in the country. But wherever international students go, making friends may not always be easy. The Journal of International and Intercultural Communication published a study done in the United States. Elisabeth Gareis of Baruch College in New York surveyed 454 international students. They were attending four-year colleges and graduate schools in the American South and Northeast. Students from English-speaking countries and from northern and central Europe were more likely to be happy with their friendships. But 38 percent of the international students said they had no close friends in the United States. And half of the students from East Asia said they were unhappy with the number of American friends they had. Professor Gareis says 30 percent said they wished their friendships could be deeper and more meaningful. Elisabeth Gareis says many East Asian students blamed themselves for their limited friendships with Americans and for not knowing the culture well enough.VOA Jessica Stahl did her own survey to find out how American students and foreign students relate to each other through her blog, The Student Union. More than 100 students, about half of them American, answered her online questions. Half of the international students and 60 percent of the Americans said they related as well or better to the other group than to their own group. 85 percent of the Americans said they have at least one international friend. But only about half said they have more than two international friends.Among the foreign students, 75 percent said they have more than two American friends. But 10 percent said they have no American friends. Not surprisingly, Professor Gareis says students who make friends from their host country return home happier with their experience. She says the students are more satisfied with their stay, have better language skills and have better attitudes toward their host country. For VOA Special English, I'm Mario Ritter. Babita introduces Mr. Iyer Brother-in-law Dibakar to Jethalal. Will Taarak solve Jethalal never ending problem? The show is inspired from the famous humorous column 'Duniya Ne Undha Chasma' written by the eminent Gujarati writer Mr. Tarak Mehta. This story evolves around happenings in "Gokuldham Co-operative Society" and covers topical issues which are socially relevant. The show predominantly - Promoolves around 'Jethalaal' (Dilip Joshi) who is an uneducated Gujarati businessman. Your 'Taarak Mehta' (Sailesh Lodha), is his neighbour. 'Jethalaal' finds a friend and philosopher in 'Taarak Mehta' and often goes to him for advice whenever he is in trouble. Jethalaal family includes his simpleton wife 'Daya Ben' (Disha Wakani) and a mischievous son 'Tapu' (Bhavya Gandhi). Tapu is a menace and a constant source of trouble to all the members of Gokuldham. They have often warned 'Jethalaal' to reform 'Tapu' or else be prepared to leave the premises. Lost hopes of being heard by his son pushes Jethalaal' to call his father 'Champaklal' (Amit Bhatt) from the village. This was his great idea of leashing some control over the mischievous Tapu. The opposite happens and the grandfather joins hands with the grandson to make life a roller coaster troublesome ride for Jethalaal.
