Julia Louis-Dreyfus on Sunday won her second straight Emmy as best comedy actress for her role as vice president of the United States in the HBO series “Veep.”

Louis-Dreyfus’s victory honored her for a portrayal of the cynical Selina Meyer in the send-up of modern-day Washington.

“This is so much good fortune it’s almost too much to bear,” said Louis-Dreyfus. “I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to make people laugh. It’s a joyful way to make a living.”
Also winning Sunday was Tony Hale, who plays Selina Meyer’s devoted aide, on the same show. He was honored as best supporting actor. “Oh, man … This is mind-blowing, mind-blowing,” Hale said. “Veep,” however, lost to ABC’s “Modern Family” for best comedy series.
Another HBO star, Jeff Daniels, subsequently was named best actor in a drama for his portrayal of news anchor Will McAvoy in Aaron Sorkin’s politically charged “Newsroom.”
Daniels noted that he’d also received an age 50-plus acting honor from AARP, which represents the interests of older Americans. “With all due respect to the AARP, this is even better,” Daniels said.
Voted best actress was Claire Danes for her role as CIA agent Carrie Mathison in another topical drama, Showtime’s “Homeland.” And “The Colbert Report” was honored as outstanding variety series, breaking a decade-long grip on the award by “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”
Louis-Dreyfus has now won more Emmys for “Veep” than she did in two roles that reached a wider audience. She won best actress in a comedy in 2006 for the CBS series “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” She won a supporting actress award in 1996 for playing Elaine Benes in “Seinfeld.”
